Matches' Journal Notes

This place is really big. I feel like we’ve been exploring and exploring and barely seeing much of this place at all. I mean, part of it is without Gry, we have to go back to Oleg’s more to resupply, and that eats up days and days.
I wonder if I can hunt with bombs…killing and cooking in one shot, that would save SO much time! I need to tell the others about this, but maybe I should test it first. I’m guessing I’d need a much bigger bomb for larger game…
Anyway, back to last couple days, we were heading back out southeast, and got jumped by a pack of wolves. It was scary, so much so that the horse Ricky and I were riding bolted! He jumped off, which left me to get the horse under control. I would have thought it better for me to jump off and dispatch them, and the big person control the big beast, but he didn’t exactly have time to chat. So who knew, we learned that Ricky is brave. Didn’t see that coming. Anyway, I knew they could handle a few ornery canines, so I did my best to get the scardy-cat horse to stop. Eventually I did, and I brought it back around, bit horses can run really far, really fast when they want to.
I also saw the most gigantic centipede I have ever seen. It crawled thru the trees and pounced! We treated it like the overgrown bug it was. I threw fire at it and Torger squashed it, but not before it almost killed our new cleric friend. That was a close one.
Oh, and there used to be people around here, because someone made a bridge over a river. Unfortunately it was so old that it couldn’t take the weight of the horses (found that out the hard way). So we had most of us cross the bridge, and I took the horses to the beach.
Then we tied them to a long rope, tossed the rope over, and they had to swim for it. The current was tricky, and a few of the horses had trouble, but in the end we all got over. I’m voting for finding another way overon the way back, or give me a week with a crew and all the lumber I’d need.
Oh, and I got rained on! It was wet and miserable.
That brings us up to tonight, we’re camped near a great big tree, but it looks like its seen better days. We found a tunnel by its roots, and it big enough for people. I wonder if someone lives down there? I want to find out. It’s been awhile since we’ve met nice people. I think we’ll introduce ourselves tomorrow. And I suppose it’s possible it won’t be people, but giant termites or something, but I hope not.

The inbetween time from death to life after

These last few weeks with my new companions and, dare I say it, friends, have been interesting. The explosive gnome, the eager human mage and the stern dwarf are an odd mix. They have allowed me to lead an interesting end of life. We’ve explored new areas and met different characters that have reminded me why I love people. I am grateful to the druid grove not only for what they taught me, but for sending me away to be a druid for the people. I had been hiding away for far too long.

My last moments in the world were difficult. I watched my surrogate daughter, Snow, attempt to protect and defend me to the last, which ended her life. That gutted me. I did not throw my life away. I do not want anyone to think I chose to die because my life was over. While I knew I would have a difficult road returning from that grief from past experience, I also knew that I would eventually make it. I also learned from the druids that death is a part of life.

No, I chose to live my life as best as I could serve my companions. I hope they are able to continue their quest.

My new days in this new ‘after-world’ are awaiting me.

When I arrived, everyone who had gone before me was there. My husband, my daughter, my Snow, Snow’s mother, and others. Snow’s mother and I were able to converse in ways I didn’t know were possible. Because we are both at peace, there was no anger, just forgiveness and understanding. I understand the way of reincarnation. I realize that we all will be sent back in different forms for different tasks. But for now, I am at peace. I am content. I am able to hold my girls, gnome and wolf, and feel safe.


Second and Third Reports to Swordlord Senott

Swordlord Senott,

Greetings from the exploratory party of the Green Belt. I am pleased to report that we have discovered a vein of GOLD a short distance from Oleg’s trading post.

We, Rickert of Wilkesmont, Gry, Matchstick Dazzlespark and Torget Ironjaw, request the right to stake a claim to this discovery under your authority. We eagerly await your reply and in the intervening time we shall explore the region around the site to determine how dangerous the surrounds are.

P.S. In the future, would it be acceptable to send such missives via an animal messenger such as a hawk? Gry is capable of this magic but we did not wish to risk a breach of etiquette.

Swordlord Senott,

It is my solemn duty to report the death of one of our group.

Gry and her wolf companion were slain by a shambling mound which attacked our camp while we investigated the area around the discovery. The monster appears to have been awoken after a group of boars began to make noise nearby. It immediately seized the wolf and Gry died valiantly attempting to free her companion. The rest of the party fought off the boars and attempted to extract Gry from the tendrils of the beast. Torger nearly died himself attempting to distract it, while Matches and I brought the mounts to escape.

It is our intent to continue our investigations in the area despite this grievous loss. We are all fully aware of the danger present in this work and our resolve is unbroken.

Dear Izarre,

Things are happening! I was really worried this idea of mine would end up being SUPER BORING, like, going to the middle of nowhere, where there’s no one, with a group of strangers, and sit there and look for something not grass and trees, and make a note of everything. But that’s not all it is at all! Its actually been super exciting!

Get this, earlier this week, i sentenced a bad guy! OK, well actually this guy named Torger did, after spending some time having a nice heart to heart chat with him. He was a terrible bandit (Topper that is, not Torger), that we’d captured after wiping out their evil-bandit-base.
I was actually super happy, since i thought we were just bringing him back to our place to, like, hang the guy or something, since one of the only rules that we were sent out here with was, “The sentence for unrepentant banditry is death by hanging,” which was what Ricky was thinking too (he’s my new wizard friend), but Torger was very persuasive (and smart! – i wonder if he’s a lawyer in his off time), and pointed out that that was for unrepentant banditry (which, since this wasn’t Topper’s first act of banditry, we (Ricky and I) were pretty sure he wasn’t very repentant) and, after talking with Torger for a half hour, I admit, Topper did seem very sorry (read: terrified), and he did promise never to rob people again. So that was suitably repentant. So we as a group that apparently upholds the law (a law? I’m sure there’ll be more soon), agreed that we liked this interpretation and officially adopted this first offense leniency rule.

We also got a little information out of him! According to Topper, there’s another, bigger bandit camp, somewhere by a lake to the south of us. And there’s a guy who was his boss, named Hapsbieden, who we met the other day and he got away after he tried to rob my first friends out here (we beat them up and he ran away). Then when we found them again he got away again. He’s really good at getting away apparently. So we’re thinking he may report back to his boss, which is probably not a great thing, but not much we can do about it now.
Then Torger really scared him and cast a spell on him, and said he’d know if he ever went back to his evil ways. And no, I have no idea if it’s true or not, but let’s just say, I don’t plan on getting on Torger’s bad side anytime soon. So then Torger gave Topper a sap (we’d disarmed him when we arrested him (isn’t that super official sounding?!) and he started fast-walking/running away (but in the opposite direction of the bandit camp. So here’s hoping we don’t see him doing bad things around here anymore, because I’d hate to have to hang that guy…

Then, when we got back to the trading post (temporary home sweet home), we were surprised that a few guards had actually arrived! Oleg and Svetlana had said they’d asked for assistance, but we’d all figured they were no shows. Instead they just showed up after the bad stuff went down. Glad we were here for them instead. Anyway, they were supper uppity when we got home, but the ended up letting us in. Their boss’s name is Krestin, and he’s not too happy about being sent to the middle of nowhere either. Hopefully he becomes less of a sourpuss. Eventually we worked out a plan with them. They’ll stay at the fort, and we’ll come and go like we planned to do before they ever got here, and if we find bad stuff, we’ll give them a heads up.
Oh, and there was also a new guy, his name is Jhod, he came with the guards, but isn’t with them- with them. I don’t know much about him yet, maybe i should buy him a drink.
Oh! speaking about drinks, do you remember the smelly drunk guy i mentioned in my first letter? the one that i didn’t think liked me? we found a case of liquor among the bandit stuff, and gave it to the drunk and apologized for talking at him too much. I think it helped! He did suspect it of poison and made me drink some first, but then he accepted it! I think we’re almost-friends now!

So we decided the best thing we can do is explore the area around the trading post, to see if there are any other threats in the immediate vicinity, and then work our way out. So we explored for several days, mostly a lot of prairie grass and hills, and not much else. But then on the 6th day, which was the 2nd after entering some woods, we cane upon some Kobolds and whomped them good! Gry found them first, but we all jumped in to help. We also got some wild, forest radishes out of the deal. When we got home with them, Svetlana was so happy to get them, that she paid us really well for them! We were going to give them to her for free, but hey, I’m a business lady, you don’t turn down good gold if someone wants to give it to you. Anyway, I expect we’ll pick up where we left off and explore some more tomorrow.

First Report to Swordlord Senott

Swordlord Senott,

I hope this report finds you in good health. As you requested the following is the first report of the progress made by the exploratory party of the Green Belt, consisting of myself, Rickert of Wilkesmont, Gry, Matchstick Dazzlespark and Torger Ironjaw.

At your suggestion, we joined the caravan or Galvin Sen headed for Oleg’s trading post and completed the journey in a week’s time. Upon our arrival we discovered that banditry was indeed plaguing the locals. The trading post has been regularly raided for several weeks. Oleg claims to have sent for help from Restov some weeks ago, but as none was evidently forthcoming we endeavored to assist him and his wife, Svetlana. The next morning, we confronted the bandits and when negotiations failed, we decapitated their leader, killed another, captured two horses and caused the remainder to flee in terror. We were completely unscathed by the melee.

We then followed the trail of the bandits into the wilderness. We headed south across the plains and along the edge of a forest to the west. We camped for the night and the following morning their trail led to a small stream flowing out of the forest. We followed this stream and found a bandit encampment. Whereupon, we were immediately attacked.

We rendered their archers useless with conjured mist, tied them down with magically compelled roots, rained bombs among them and again decapitated one of them with an enlarged dwarven hammer. This battle was more threatening, and while we took slight injuries, we nevertheless prevailed. One further bandit killed, several badly hurt, one captured and the rest fled.

It is our estimation that this attack should serve as sufficient deterrent to any immediate resumption of banditry from this band. It is our intent to interrogate the prisoner and put an end to his brigandry with a noose. We shall then, having at least partially secured the immediate environs, begin our survey of the surrounding terrain.

Travel, Progression, and Success Report

For the perusal of High Inquisitor Stonespear:

Per Inquisition standard operating procedure, I arrived in Restov two days prior to the scheduled meeting with Eris Senott, Swordlord. Nothing appeared to be amiss within Restov, just a small town with typical small town problems: missing shipments, bandits, and the like. It was nothing that I became too concerned about.

On the day of the meeting, I woke early, and took up a post to see who else had meetings with the Swordlord prior to me. There was a well requisitioned group that arrived, and was quickly ushered through the gate. Additionally, there were 3 others that came to call on the Swordlord’s estate that morning. Two female gnomes, arriving separately, the first with bright hair dyed red, the second that arrived with a wild wolf that she left outside, and finally a human that looked as if they had heard too many stories about wizards and wanted to do everything he could to “look the part.”

Shortly before the appointed time of the meeting, I approached the gate and was brought to into a room to wait for the Swordlord. It was just my luck that the group I was assigned to was not the well requisitioned and experienced group, but the ragtag group of the two gnomes and stereotypical wizard. After a fair bit of waiting, Eris Senott graced us with his presence and explained to us the reason for the meeting. It seems that he wanted us to explore an area to the south and west of Restov, an area known as the Green Belt. Not much is known about the area, outside of the presence of a trading post in the northern part run by a man named Oleg. Swordlord Senott also acknowledged that he was sending out multiple groups on similar missions, although not all to the same areas. To aid us in travel, he mentioned there was a merchant that was heading toward Oleg’s trading post, and that we could likely travel with him. Protection in greater numbers would benefit us against the bandits that supposedly grew more bold the further from civilization they were. After a good night’s rest, we headed out toward the Green Belt.

The journey was expected to take about a week, and there were two settlements along the way where we could stop overnight: Nivotkas, and Fort Sorrento. Both were pretty small settlements, and I could gather no information of value, besides news of bandits and the like. This did not take me by surprise. Speaking with the merchant, we found out his name was Galvin Sen. He was a small trade merchant, generally carrying general supplies, but he did mention that occasionally he would come across more specialized items. Also travelling with us was an old and rough looking human that was drunk or sleeping every time I saw him. He was not very talkative, but his eyes betrayed that he was much more alert than his inebriated state would suggest. I would do well to keep my eye on him.

Our travels to the trading post were boringly uneventful. The bandits of the area likely did not want to deal with a group of 4 travelling with a merchant (and his sleepy, drunk guard).

Upon arriving at Oleg’s trading post, we were greeted by his wife Svetlana. She seemed to be apathetic toward us arriving, but her expression turned to worried when we asked if we could stay the night. It seems that there was a bandit group that had been harassing them weekly, taking all of their wares and leaving them with nothing. That group was due to arrive the following morning.

During our meeting, Swordlord Senott was very clear. Unrepentant banditry was against the law, punishable by death. The choice in this matter was clear. We were going to help out Oleg and Svetlana, and convince the bandits to turn their attentions elsewhere, or they would be dealt with in swift and violent fashion.

The following morning, the bandits arrived right on cue. After some verbal jousting, they decided to make things physical. We had set up defenses and come up with a plan. Gry (the gnome with the wolf) threw an entangle spell over all of the bandits, trapping a number of them. The wizard, Rickert, used an Enlarge Person spell on me, doubling my size. This turned out to be very handy, as it’s not every day that you see an 8 foot tall dwarf standing in the doorway of a trading post that you’ve just come to rob. Matches (the other gnome), also threw some sort of incendiary device into the middle of the bandits, which exploded in a ball of fire. After the dust settled, a couple of the bandits had fled back whence they came, and another two had perished. That should send a message that banditry would no longer be tolerated in the Green Belt.
